I have three children—plus a husband and cats—so I write whenever I get the chance. Sometimes ideas come to me when I'm driving, sometimes late at night. I always have a notebook and pen with me, just in case. (If I'm driving, I keep saying the poem over and over to myself until I have a chance to write it down.) I always write longhand and type a poem into the computer only when the first draft is finished. When I'm working on a poem, I read it aloud to make sure the sound and the rhythm are how I want them to be—which is okay at home but I get funny looks when I forget and do this in public!
